FB has become the top in general social network while linkedin become the top in professional social network. Do you feel or know any opportunity to build a new social network. Point me a new area which can be covered up with a social network. :)

You'd need at least a million dollars to start a true social network that would make good money. I think it's pretty much a waste of time otherwise, especially if you're thinking of buying into some cheap existing software for a couple hundred dollars or so, or even free software, and hoping a great idea will carry you to the stars.

If that's the plan, you're better off buying $200 worth of lottery tickets and crossing your fingers.

The popularity of any social networking site depends on flexibility and front end user interaction ability. Facebook has raised the consumer expectation to such a great extinct. So if any site is planning to have that space then it should have more robust users interaction than that of the facebook.

Hi. In my opinion, there's always a space for a new social network site. I guest it just depend on how flexible that social network site is. What it can offer to the people and how it can cope with the user needs. Like the popular facebook and twitter that gives their user what they need and also what they want.

There are roughly too many social networking sites nowadays that
is competing.. and Face book is their largest competitor.
There is still a space for new ideas for social networking sites
but the competition is very tight.

Exactly, it would be far less work and there's at least the faintest chance you might get some money back. :)

the scope for social networks are getting less and less. But you can always start niche social networks, like traveling, etc. You may not be able to make money out of it, but they can easily help a website to get quality traffic if it is in the same field.

nowadays you can make a social media start up only if you own big $$$, in opposite way it's hard to find investors, look at the new startups at the Silicon Valley, 9 of 10 are closed with no success.
How are you gonna be able to compete with them?

The thing is, saying 'you need a really fresh idea' is kind of an oxymoron in this case. The reason for that is social networks aren't a fresh/new idea, so whatever idea you come up with isn't going to be new either.

i would suggest starting off networks based on specific niches . still with that you won't be going to rule the social media world , but still if your niche got attention, the site may grow into something that can give an earning.. but we are not talking about millions.

well twitter came after facebook and its going strong. foursquare , gowalla etc are also the newbies which i would say were not a failure. but with facebook going after them with places, i think there future is kinda blank too. you bring out a fresh idea , a user friendly inteface you may stand a chance. but again there be much cost involved + you should have more fresh reserve idea which you need to implement when people start to loose interest in current one

I think there's space - I think it would need a hell of a lot of investment, good promotion and perhaps celebrity endorsement. It would also need a killer USP

There is always space for new social networks provided they offer something unique, something attractive, something different, something usefull and necessary for web users. Innovation is the key. Copying other sites won't work, there are too many of them.
