With the advent of facebook and other social networking sites like twitter and Google+, do you think that people are loosing interest in posting on web forums and forum audiences are declining?

no way. the interaction you get in a forum is so unique to a certain topic.

facebook and google and all that is just general banter between your friends.

    even IRC channels still exist.

    No way, what the heck...?
They are the synergy and life form of IM....
A stopping point for information, discussions, a learning center with valuable resources at ones finger tips.
Forums survive because of people interaction and desire to learn, seek information, build. We're all kinda creatures of habit...

Forums rule, and thrive...! enuf said...

Forums can not be replaced by social networks because of the power of the contents BUT the tricky point is to get users to create content and add value to the forum without you are right but if you manage to keep people active you will succeede

Social networks will never replace forums. The beauty of a forum is the FOCUS. You can create a community based around a single area of interest. Sites like Facebook, by their very nature, have to be infinitely broad in scope. There is no depth. The beauty of social networking sites (from a marketing POV) is that you can of course use them as a fantastic pool from which to recruit members to your niche forums & membership sites. So if anything, the outlook is getting healthier for anyone wanting to use forums as a business model.
