Authority Site - Content is king - but...

    I SEO other ppl's sites part time and really don't have time to work on my own site. If I did and got into a subject of - let's say the Civil War - and kept on adding great content on it and end up w/ hundreds of pages. Also - let's say I did a lot of on-page optimization as well.

    Now, I won't become an authority site but then would have to go out and promote it. Just because a site sits there as a mega site and well optimized - it won't do well in the SERPs. Hence, this is where I would have to go out and do off-page optimization as well - basically, promoting my site.

    Agree or Disagree? Will a mega-site that is optimized well sit there and climb in the SERPs over time w/out promotion? Or will it need site promotion (off-page) as well?

    I'm thinking the latter...
