Background color in Adobe Illustrator

I know in Photoshop you can change the background color, but is this possible in Illustrator too? I'm trying to make a graphic in Illustrator that has white text on a black background, but still have it scalable vector. Anyone know if this can be done, and how?

    I know this problem.
the simple solution I found is to make a block in your desired bg color in a new layer and just lock this layer..
    not that hard... right? :)

dvirhazout is correct. The only way I know how is by using the layers to get the desired color results I am after. I would suggest you do it that way because you don't want to change it in the options every time you want to change the canvas color.
