Background replacement

Photoshop allows users to change the users' photo background; is there a similar solution - especially one that is economical? Photoshop download takes quite a while, so is there any application (download) that is light on bandwidth?

I agree with the others, but it's just recently that Gimp has received a decent gui that makes it worth while using it. Before the update it was tedious work trying to match features with Photoshop and find similar actions in the horrible interface. But as I said, now it's good to go! :)
