We all know that all great websites get copied.
If you have one (or are thinking of making one) that could potentially be a unique idea, how do you protect it?

Do you just be the first one out there, like DP, YouTube etc.. and hope for the best?
How would you go about protecting your web based idea?

If you think it's going to be a huge hit, definitely protect it.

You could always trademark certain aspects of your website that make it unique.

    It could be costly, however.

Just go for it and dont worry about protection.Think about it.
Youtube is huge,as soon as it became popular everyone wanted a "clone" of the script ,have a google search and i bet you can get your hands on a clone script in minutes. However do you know of any sites that have used a clone youtube script and got even 1/10 as popular as youtube ? Nope not one,
Same applies for facebook, twitter, tinyUrl etc etc,if your first and hit the market hard, yes everyone will want to copy you,but as long as you keep doing what your doing well, the competition will always be 10 steps behind. So go for it ! Youd make more money by just going for it,than by paying $$$ for protecting it and it possibly failing.
Ofcourse i dont know what your idea is,but care to share it with us ? :)

You basically have to just go all out on it and make it big, the thing is you need to have enough capital so you can make it big before any of the big guys discovers you and launch the same thing and make it big before you. You basically have to get in a position where when big companies discover your idea they can either buy your company or just move out. Look at Google and how many social networking sites they tried to copy and come up with wave, buzz w/e the only one that's really working is youtube and they bought it off of someone else...

Although having a trademark attorney is the only way to do it 100% correct you can always add a copyright stamp to you materiel. It at least gives you a basis to defend your materiel. The other thing you can do is write up a description of the product or project and snail mail it certified to yourself. Do not open it but rather keep it in a safe place. Should the time ever come that you need to defend it the date stamp on the unopened letter will be admisable in court and establish that you were first.
