Best CMS system...

What would you guys say the best CMS system is?

I own a tech site, and I'm looking to get a CMS system -- but still undecided as to which is best.

The one that I like is ContentTeller (successor of storyteller). But, are there any better ones? If so, why?

Well I am new to the site and I have already seen a few threads with this question. You might want to browse through them.

I have used a few different types. What are you going to be doing with a CMS on your tech site? Sell merch, post articles, blog? And what type of time are you going to be putting into learning a CMS as some are alot quicker to set up but do not have the flexibility. You can almost equate it like this: the less steep the learning curve the less flexible the program will be.

Drupal has solved all my problems to date not to mention they have a huge user base for questions.

 

I have Wordpress for a blog. It will be used for tech news -- which will display down the page. I've seen ContentTeller, and it has a downloads module ect. it looks quite interesting -- and with some design, you can get it looking good. Never tried Drupal. Is it free, or paid software?

 

I like Drupal. I started using it only a couple of days ago and I can recommend it It's free, by the way.

 

Thanks. Any modules (add-ons) comes with Drupal? Such as, downloads ect. What ever CMS system I get, it will definitely be re-designed.

 

Drupal is free and it has a massive collections of modules/themes/tutorials it is a great project and has been ranked one of the best CMS in the last 3 years. The downside is that it has a steep learning curve and will take a little bit to get used to.

To be brief, the best CMS is the one that serves what you want. For example:

Are you the only one adding content?
Plan on having members? With different permission levels? With very specific requirements?
Do you plan to expand your site to add many more features than you have now?
How complex is the information you plan to present? Lots of pictures? Multi-page?
How good a coder/programmer are you?
How much of a learning curve can you tolerate?
What kind of hosting do you have (some CMS are more resource-intensive at the core than others)?

For example, Drupal is extremely powerful, almost unlimited, if you are a strong technical person and can take the learning curve. Also, as has been mentioned, there aren't very many free, readily available templates or add-ons. Joomla is not as strong in terms of member controls (at least not at the 1.0.x level - 1.5 may have fixed that), but has a ton of freebies and can be customized fairly easily. There is another little one, called Website Baker, that is what I use for folks who really want to get up and running quickly and can't be bothered with the ins and outs of the more powerful systems like Drupal and Joomla. It is actually surprisingly good for something so lightweight, with enough modules to make a smaller site happy.

All of these systems have full demos available at Open Source CMS. If you haven't already, go there and play with the demos there. You actually get to login into the CMS administration and front end, which really allows you to get a better technical feel of each system. An hour or so of trial can save you days if not weeks of frustration later on (or at least make you feel more confident in your decision). Also, there, you can read reviews from other webmasters - that's really a huge help too.

Just remember, if your site is going to be involved, chances are that no CMS off-the-shelf is going to have exactly what you want. You'll need plugins, extensions, modules (whatever the term-of-choice is for the CMS).

So, do a little research, read what other webmasters have to say, play with demos, and take the plunge!

 

Joomla is the best for web sites, wordpress for blogs.

I find these to be either very hard to design or very slow to use does anyone know of any that are fast to use? (loading speeds)

 

I find that Joomla has been great for me.

 

The Best? There is nothing out the for free of charge other than Drupal, but its not an easy CMS to start with. Second is Joomla.

 

Joomla because it has great plugins and it's very user friendly.
