JomSocial will be coming out with version 1.1 in a few weeks. It's really moving ahead.

Wordpress with Tags to Technorati, and onlywire plugins, is a good choice.

The best script paid to social network is the social engine.

The best free social networking script is ELGG.

It really depends on what you want to do now, where you see yourself go and your level of literacy with software.

I would suggest you, at least, look at Drupal and its Organic Groups modules. If you are not brand new to programming Drupal is very easy to modify once you get your head about how the framework does things. On top of that, Drupal, as is, out of the box, may at the very least give you most, if not all, the functionality you require. That will allow you to use the approach to have you site, more or less, immediately functional use it, and then gradually improve its functionality and/or appearance, perhaps even based on your participants feedback.

I'm using JomSocial and the latest release isn't all that buggy. It's features are not as comprehensive as facebook but it's improving quickly.
