I just don't understand these folks that do not love Mr. Bill Gates.

Can the members explain this to me?

How could anyone hate the richest man in the world?

Isn't he the one that will save us all from spyware and adware?

Most are just jealous I think. From a business point of view, you can't argue he has played it well.

That is a fallacy. PC-DOS and MS-DOS computer operating systems were invented by Tim Patterson. Bill Gates purchased it from him (I think for $50,000) and sold a license to IBM. Gates invented nothing to get Microsoft going.

    But some of his business practicses ? ? ? ? ?

He has kick-started the computer revoltion and become very rich in the prosess. ...Good....well done

Many M$ partners have become M$ victims. .......Bad

Promissing OS's have been crushed by M$. ........Bad

M$ payed no dividens to it's shareholder for far to many years .......Bad

    M$ is anti open-source. ...................Bad

M$ uses all it's resorcess ? to beat down competion. .........Bad

M$ blames hackers for viruses worms and trojans and not their Faulty OS .....VERY BAD

I will stop here as I do not wish to incure M$ legal rathe.

Mr Gates quit now even with all the B$'s at your disposal you can not beat or buy LINUX or the resources to keep up with the develpment curve the open source comunity is on.

Don't worry Mushroom, no one will ever sue you for expressing your right of "free speech" on a open public forum.

You could countersue them for millions and win.

M$ would not waste their resources to file against you.

They have problems fighting battles like the EU and the Antitrust problems in the states.

You could talk until your bottom jaw fell off and they could not care less, you are one of 200 million people that say the same things you do everyday.

Do you see M$ putting any of those folks in court?

No problem. It is fascinating how Gates got MS going and how IBM blew it. ;)

It was brilliant. All he did was promise IBM an operating system for purchase for $200,000. IBM said no, but will license until Big Blue is ready with their own. Gates signed the deal, for $8 per CPU I think, then ran to Patterson and negotiated Patterson out of his system for $50K. Great bit of middleman shuffle. Today... Windows (which is a ripoff of Apple... who ripped it off from HP).

Yes, IBM tried to hide the cheese which was taken from Apple who took it from HP. Now Bill owns the cheese and all the ingredients. Not bad for a man with a vision and the chutzpah to pull it off!

I wonder what made IBM move to opensource if IBM and Microsoft were such great buddies in the past?

No one ever said they were buddies. They tried to beat Windows and free themselves from Billy boy when they developed OS/2.

IBM also tried to go proprietiary with hardware a couple of times along the way. But in essence the PC had become Open Source so maybe they saw the light and decided to go Open Source on O/S also.

IBM is promoting the hell out of LINUX (Payback is doublefold) The battle I see in the headlines is between PHP and .NET.

    Maybe Shawn can explain?

It is true that IBM is promoting Opensource like no tomorrow although, I have to admit, their advertisements for Linux are extremely vague and terrible

It was pure and simple business sense. You can't fault the guy for having the brains and knowing how to play the game. Honestly, one could argue that if it wasn't for Bill there might not be a Digital Point today

Not entirely true, much of the code for OS/2 was written by Microsoft themselves. Much of the NT codebase was in fact originally written for OS/2. Microsoft and IBM were essentially going in different directions - IBM believing that computing was still about a client/server architecture (and that debate is still going on really..).

To a large extent Microsoft got lucky - the Unix wars of the late 80s left the door open for Microsoft to come in and dominate with Windows.

To get back to the originaly topic, I agree that all the Bill Gates hate is stupid. He's not forcing you to use his operating system (I certainly don't), he's just running a very profitable business.
