I'm looking for ways to download people's ie bookmarks.

Does anyone know if there are any sites where you can upload all your ie or FF bookmarks and let them be downloaded publicly?

This would *really* help me out.

    Cheers

    Ol

IE bookmarks can be exported to a text file which .ZIPped and emailed, attached to forum posts, etc. just like any other computer file.

File | Import and Export | etc.

Yeah I understand that, it's not my bookmarks I'm interested in - it's other peoples...

I need bookmarks, categorised, and in large quantities...

    It's for a project I'm working on. :)

    >>As a side note, there is nothing BH about this project<<

Hi, SEbasic. Do you have a MySQL db or do you want one that uses a flat file?

Do you want something to run on *nix, or can you use Windows servers? I am thinking Access db.

I have seen lot's of these, but never tried one. There was something on DevShed about using HTML Tidy to make the exported bookmarks/favourites files XML valid, then it just takes some script (same tutorial, if I can find it) to organize it all into one document/database.

Here is what I am looking at now - Bookmark Scripts at DevShed.

I can quickly set up a subdomain to test stuff if you need any space.

Hi Mik - Thanks for replying... (also nice to see you frequenting here a little more often)...

They sound like great suggestions, but it not the script that I am looking for (I already have one written for the job), it's literally just people bookmarks I'm after.

Really I'm looking for a site where people just upload all their bookmarks, and they are then on public display (I guess a bit like technorati, just not only for blogs)...

Somewhere where I can get a list of deep-linked pages on varying topics that people have collectedand categorised accordingly.

    Cheers

Not trying to knock your idea, but most peoples bookmarks aren't categorized as you'd probably like them to be categorized. If you are able to accomplish this you'd have to do some recategorization for sure.

For IE I am sure you could create an ActiveX object that would query the local bookmarks and transfer them to your server. You may also be able to write a Java applet that would run in all browsers to do this.

    Yeah, but that's spyware... :)

Thanks for the idea, but I don't fancy being arrested...

I *know* there are places out there, because I found some *ages* ago - I just can't find the bookmark

How is having an ActiveX control that the user initiates by going to a page to automatically transfer their bookmarks any different then them saving them and uploading them to your site?

I was not implying to place this applet on a page hidden from the user. Just provide it as a way to transfer bookmarks for people who initiate it themselves. It's not SpyWare if the user is initiating the transfer. It's no different then them sending you a file with their bookmarks.

You could also write an application that users could download which will do the same thing. Once again, this would not be SpyWare, and it would be initiated by the user and they would be in total control of what the program does.

You're not going to be able to do it any other way. It's just not possible. You can't access Favorites through JavaScript for obvious reasons. Your only choices are to use an applet, write a client app. that the user can download to perform the transfer, or write a tutorial for each browser that users can follow to save their favorites and then upload them via a form on your site.

OK - I misunderstood what you were suggesting - this makes sense...

I may see if I can get something like this written...

    Thanks for the suggestion.

Ok. I thought you had to of mis-understood me. Believe me, I am just as much against Spy/Adware as anyone else in their right mind.

Let me know if you'd like my help with the project.

    http://www.qindex.info/Q_incld/Qindx_drctry.php?id=Qindex

I followed the link in post #3 on this page:
    http://www.frech.ch/online-bookmarks/formu/viewtopic.php?id=34

Which I got at this phpscript page
    http://www.frech.ch/online-bookmarks/

In fact, I think I will back-up my WP db and install this!

    and...

I am seeing links to established bookmark sites at the script sites themselves. I will post any more I find.

    Gentlemen :O)

I could only help with an ActiveX solution (which would only work from Internet Explorer).. If you still want my help let me know.. Looks as though MikMik has found a good product, though.

I have been looking more at this, and it is mostly in German, so if I don't understand something, I am SOL :O) So far, I cleared my db and I will try this out. Give me a couple of hrs, I guess.

I have found that many scripts do not work as good as they look like they should. In fact, I am finding approximately 1 out 3 that I try actually pan out.

I don't want to disrupt any good ideas you have, iTISTIC.

Okay, just for fun, how many shortcuts do you guys have in your Favourites folder? I have 6.11Mb, 1,553 files, 328 folders.

I use about 20 of them LOL!

This is the purpose of the site in my signature... You can view public bookmarks at http://public.sitejot.com

Now if you want a HUGE collection of public bookmarks, it does not get any bigger then http://del.icio.us/
