I've been trying to internally settle this debate as well. I've played more with Joomla and while the interface can be a bit confusing at times, I've grown to like it. I've just started playing with WP since so many people seemed to swear by it and its magic love by SEO's. But I don't like the lack of granular control for WP vs. Joomla. Maybe I just haven't spent enough time w/ it. Perhaps the WP folks can weigh in. Also, anyone have any first hand experience with using Joomla with good SEO results?

Well the Joomla interface while powerful, seems very slow, bulked up, etc. The wordpress is very speedy and swift.

i find that joomla is a good option... its kind of the apple vs microsoft arguement in my opinion.. one is over simplified and the other perfectly simple but a lot more indepth when required.. the speed i havent ever noticed much difference on.. but i swear by joomla in the choice for a CMS and often reccomend it to those who are creating websites for the first time rather than using limited website creator that can be purchased

Wordpress is easy to maintain and learn. Joomla is advanced CMS. But on the whole I think for multiple site management you should use Wordpress.

Remember too for Wordpress there is also the MU (multi user) version for this very purpose -- http://mu.wordpress.org/ -- but I've never used it.

    Some options for multi-user CMS:

b2evolution.net - I've never used this but I hear great things about it.
lifetype.net - I have never used this and know nothing about it.
Wordpress MU - I've use this but I dislike it because it's a clumsy old version of Wordpress that is unpolished.
Drupal - I tried Drupal multi-user couldn't get it to work.

If you go with Wordpress MU or Drupal, you will need to know PHP if you want to customize it for your purposes.

I am not a web developer, but I would have to disagree on this point. I find Joomla 1.5 to be quite quick on the administrative backend. I think my website also loads fairly fast, it seems mostly limited by bandwidth speed from the user.

As many people have said in this thread, it depends on what you want to do. Wordpress is good if you're blogging, Drupal is good if you want to have more flexibility with your application (social network, more modules, e-commerce etc). I just wrote this in another thread for someone else asking about multi-site:

"With drupal you can easily set the site up on the multi-site platform so each ministry can have it's own site/sub domain that all use the same Drupal application.

    http://drupal.org/node/43816

    http://drupal.org/node/53705

This is excellent for if you need to update to the newest version, you only have to update one application. We're currently working on a number of multi-site platforms with Drupal and it's the best way to go imho."
