Wordpress should work just fine for your needs. However, if you have a few bucks to spend I highly recommend vBulletin or Joomla depending on which part of the site you envision being used the most; vbulletin (more forum) or Joomla (more news)

For user-friendliness, neat and tidy backend and visual options I would go with WordPress. Personal favorite and increasingly liked from both tech savvy and non-savvy users.

For variety of functionality and combinations of plugins Joomla is a pretty good option. A little more complicated than WP but gives a wide freedom when used properly.

Drupal is also great but I can only recommend for a little more advanced users, developers and such. It is still going strong for a number of years and rightfully so. Still lacks the number of plugins WP and Joomla can offer.

I would also agree with you on WordPress, simply because they have thousands of plug-ins that site owners can install on their Web servers and enhance the functionality of their WordPress blogs.
