I want to learn more advanced techniques for web building (but mostly for working on my own sites).

...I am Presently teaching myself PHP and my SQL, but have come across the JOOMLA program and am wondering if i should drop learning PHP and MYSQL in lieu of learning JOOMLA.

I was hoping for some opinions and input from programmers out there.

Should i drop PHP/SQL and just go straight for Joomla?

...your constructive input is greatly appreciated !

You cannot learn Joomla without knowledge of PHP and MySQL. So continue to learn PHP and MySQL and then start learn Joomla.

Use Joomla if you want to setup a website right away, its not a programing language, its a ready made CMS wherein after uploading it to your server / host, run some setup and thats it, you have a website.

Use PHP if you want to create a custom made website, if you know PHP, you can add/ modify some of the features offered by Joomla.

CMS is easy to use by UI, you dont need PHP & MySQL to use, and dont know how to edit/modify/.... :D
