Err yeah, they put hidden links on every man and his dog's page that uses their code (including me).

Well done though, they have a great service (I'm a paying customer). I like the fact I have all the stats in one spot (as oppose to webalizer on each domain).

Yes, they won a few awards too not long ago. Great site, great counter. Does exactly what it says on the tin.

I use it too in addition to my log analyzer. Although like you I paid for it long ago so I wouldn't be required to have the link.

The free version is well worth the link though ;)

It is but you never know what SE's are going to think of it and I wouldn't risk my sites even for a great free service.

That is true although Google is fully aware of Statcounter so if they were applying some type of filter/penalty/etc, I tend to believe they would exempt them.

After all, it is a legitamite product, etc.

Plus I also believe they are aware of every real PR10 and if they had a problem with whats on offer would bump them down to a 9.

I dont believe there is anything to worry about, anyone with sense would know that statcounter is used by alot of non web people on their sites. Imagine them all getting pulled down for underhand linking. Statcounter has been there for years, Google has seen it for years and let it grow and grow. I have no fear about using their statcounter in anyway, now or in the future.

I agree whole heartedly ... The few sites I've used the "free" service on were not hurt at all over at least a 6-8 month period ;)

I've noticed their PR being high for quite some time - It is truly deserved !

You get a log of the last 100 hits for free. Pay $9 a month and you can have 1000 etc. Look out for the sentence 'increase your log size'.

Glad I saw this post, because I was wondering how they achieved the PR 10 with so many sites doing site wide linking to statcounter. I have read that Google penalizes for site wide linking. Also, the hidden link (which is an option I'm sure many sites use) how come there are no penalties for that?

I wouldnt say that statcounter uses a hidden link:
How are you going to have an invisible tracker with a visible link ? The links are not really hidden IMO - yes, they are only in the source - but I think common sense prevails on this one.

A bit off topic, but can anyone show me examples of sitewides doing damage?

If a spider can see something that the average web surfer can't see, wouldn't that be "hidden"? If you look at any pages cached text with the invisible statcounter on it, that link will magically appear.

    Oh dear!

I liked them, but I didn't know they were Irish!

    Just kiddin', great service.

Although I use the free service as it's good enough for me and in such case I don't mind "paying" with a BL, I wonder if they make it clear to paying customers that there will be an outgoing link on their pages, and most of all, hidden!?

Man, they could make a fortune selling text links alone :)

    I'd love to have PR10.

Start building a tracking script then! What they do isn't exactly rocket-science but it takes some entrpeneurial skills to get it to the level they're at.

Yeah.. I'm just so lazy ;)

I could probably build a stat script like that, would take me a while.. but its deffinatly possible... but there is so much competition.
