Converting DVD's to Quicktime movie?

Discussion in 'General Chat' started by ViciousSummer, Nov 8, 2004.

I'm playing around with my new iMac and I want to try out the iMovie program. Does anyone know of any Macintosh compatible (free would be nice too) software that can convert a DVD into a mpeg?

    How about this one?
    http://mac.softpedia.com/public/cat/21/21-76.shtml
    it says it's free.

    http://mac.softpedia.com/public/cat/21/21-7.shtml
says it's shareware. It might only encode like 30 mins because they want you to buy.

    http://mac.softpedia.com/public/cat/21/21-132.shtml
    says free as well.

    http://mac.softpedia.com/public/cat/21/21-137.shtml
    this says free as well.

    OR
    http://homepage.mac.com/major4/
    this one is shareware.

Any of these seem like they'd work?
Sorry I've only done this for Windows. :)

I know a software which can help you to do this. The uSeesoft DVD Ripper for Mac.
It can help you rip DVD to MPEG. Besides, it can rip DVD movies and convert to all popular video/audio formats, like AVI, MP4, 3GP, MPEG, MOV, FLV, MP3, M4A, WAV etc.

As video DVDs use MPEG-2 as codec, it is not suitable for editing. Handbrake also does not output anything useful, as it uses MPEG-4 codecs like H264.
.mp4 is a container for such a codec. And MPEG-4 is also not suited for editing.

You can get MPEG Streamclip and open the ripped DVD folder with that application and convert to a .mov using the DV or Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC), as those are meant for editing. But you need the 20USD QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component for that, which you can get at the Apple Online Stor, you could try Daniusoft DVD ripper for Mac

I agree with Jimmy6280. I try the DVD ripper he suggested; and it works.
