In Canada they have developed a Covid-19 test that only takes an hour. Today it was approved by the Canadian government and should be made available later on this week.

In England they are now training dogs to sniff out Covid-19. People who are positive emit a particular odor when they exhale that cannot be detected by humans but can by dogs. The British government hopes to have these medical detection dogs in service at airports in 2 or 3 months.

All this ought to make a difference while we are waiting for a vaccine.

Yup, misread the original post. Of course, I am now more than a bit surprised that you have given up on the human race, altogether, and believe that the world would be better off without any of us.

Is this a test for the actual virus or for antibodies? There has been a lot of talk about how important an antibody test could be in determining whether or not enough of a country's herd has been exposed and, therefore, is immunized against re-infection. There has even been some speculation that California had a lot of its population exposed in the Fall of last year (a lot of people were dying from the flu back then, but there was no hysteria about it) because they had so many visitors from China in September, October, etc., and that is why they have such a flat curve now: the California "herd" had already been immunized against it months ago. Not yet provable, but intriguing if this is the case.

It's a test to see if you are positive for Covid-19, here is how it works. They swab the inside of your mouth with a Q-tip. Then they insert the tip into the opening of a small canister with a screen and a logic board in it. The apparatus is the size and shape of an electric can opener. Within an hour the screen gives you the results. It is supposed to be 99.9% accurate.

Here's an interesting factoid about the shutdown: the closing of restaurants and scaling back of grocery stores has basically shut down the major food source for city rats in the U.S. They have taken to roaming the streets in gangs to find food and even to cannibalism of their young to survive. Some cities are taking advantage of this situation to declare their pest control teams as essential workers and have them re-doubling their efforts to control the rats, including with poisoned bait food.

Gives a whole new meaning to urban gang warfare...

Their leader is no ordinary rat, no sir. A surveillance camera spotted him wearing a tiny little tinfoil hat....smart.;)

Whoo boy is that ever the truth! My definition/list of essential workers has expanded exponentially. It has been eye-opening to witness how many occupations are required just to keep most of us alive. Too many to list, despite my initial attempt to do so a while back in this thread. The list in my mind has grown a lot since then and I am sure that it is still incomplete...

These events will come back quickly. Entertainers crave adulation, even if they are just giving it to each other.

So, apparently, there is a mass protest going on today at the statehouse of Michigan. The nutty, leftist governor has apparently instituted some crazy restrictions, including telling residents that they cannot travel to their own, in-state vacation homes if they would prefer to isolate there. She also shut down a number of stores or areas of stores that she decided were not selling essential products. Note that she is the same crazed, power-hungry governor that temporarily banned the use of Hydroxychloroquine because Trump Bad, until she was forced to go back to Trump and beg for some of the drug as the deaths piled up in her state.

Corona is here to stay for a long long time. Council of 'religious wise men' has declared government restrictions on public gathering will no longer apply on mosques and normal prayer gatherings will start and continue in Holy month of ramadan just like everything is normal. In response the government is behaving like a dog who has its tail tucked between its legs.

we've done that because those holiday homes are usually in small towns whose medical services struggle in peak season and definitely wouldn't cope with a covid19 cluster. Some entitled families have tried but they're getting little sympathy when they get caught and sent home.

A friend who lives in one of those towns said people did make it through and were flouting the lockdown rules.

It must be hard to tell your kids to stay in their bubble when they're at a place where they normally free range.

Something that the Fake News media here in the U.S. does not seem to want to report on is hospitalizations caused by Covid-19.

CDC, as of 4/4, said 41,250 Americans were hospitalized because of Covid-19.
Covid Tracking Project, as of 4/13, said 62,673 Americans were hospitalized because of Covid-19.

CDC, for last year's flu, said that 490,561 Americans were hospitalized because of influenza.
CDC, for the year before that, said that 810,000 Americans were hospitalized because of influenza.

So we somehow managed to survive and not overwhelm hospitals despite not "flattening the curve" in 2019 or 2018. Keep in mind that flattening the curve also translates into prolonging the life of the virus. And, now, it also means taking the best economy in decades and killing it. This is what happens when you give control to modelers and their enablers.

    not overwhelm hospitals?

Not how this American doctor describes it

    ref: Washington post

or this from my sister who is running a UK NHS hospital
There will be hospitals who are spared this experience but it's undeniable that in some countries and some cities this is very, very overwhelming.

I can only speak to the U.S., but, too date, no one in the U.S. who has needed a hospital bed has been denied one. No one in the U.S., who has needed a ventilator has been denied one. In fact, there are thousands of beds and ventilators sitting unused. In NYC, for example, the Javits Center and the USS Comfort and their thousands of beds are basically empty. And, there are those who still complain that Trump dropped the ball, didn't move quickly enough, etc.; he inherited a national stockpile where the cupboard was bare and he turned it around with help from private manufacturers. We expect to be sending ventilators around the world in the near future.

That is indeed a true fact but......You and your company had hundreds of thousands of tinfoil hats stocked up in warehouses all over the country. Now let's be honest here, that really helped out Trump and made his job a whole lot easier.

I am just a humble tinfoil hat peddler trying to help the true victims of the world. It's not just the Coronavirus. Think of the evil mind control demons, the mind-reading government agents, 5G, 4G...all the G's, and what about the solar flares or near-miss asteroids or alien abductions? It is a moral imperative for me to keep our shelves stocked with our advanced tinfoil hat designs <cue patriotic song...>
