Corrupt IP address

This is the first post I've sent from my new business premises and its a problem lol.

The internet connection we are using is a central server in a business park and we have a static IP address. Every so often it gives me a warning that the IP is conflicting.

Has anyone had this problem before? My network/connecting to the internet knowledge is limited so if you need me to try and explain some of "my" terms further then just ask lol.

When the warning comes up sometimes it cuts off the internet. If I try and set the connection to automatically detect settings then the internet doesnt work.

Thanks in advance for any help.

yes i get this problem with my router, windows gives the error when the router gives two or more connections the same ip, if you only have 1 ip for many connections then it will happen.

if you are using a router get into the settings and change the amount of ips the router gives out, the ips should something dodgy like 192.168.1.wotever

Thats exactly what the router gives me but it doesnt seem to work because I have to use the static IP.... I think. It's not like a normal broadband connection because it's a server in the business park that I'm getting my connection from.

on my connection i have 1 static ip going into the router, (lets say 127.0.0.1)
the router then gives a brand new ip to each connection (its set to give from a range of 192.168.1.1 -> 192.168.1.100)

depending on your router you should be able to change the setting (i also think you'll have 2 restart router & connections)

Check if you have a static IP on your local machine and if you do switch it to a dynamic IP using DHCP. You might be conflicting with someone in another office.

And the cycle continues LOL. I'm sure someone else mistyped their IP address, so they took yours. Now you've taken someone else's LOL. I'm surprised that if you have a central source for IPS that they do not have everyone on DHCP instead. Would really prevent such things from happening.

lol well there are only 60 units in the business park and its more industry based so I'm about the only techy business here. I reckon there are maybe 10 max businesses using the server so I have around 240 IPs to choose from (according to my brother)

On a more serious note, I'm not sure how much at risk people realize they are here.

If anyone has a windows 98 or ME box, and you know their IP address in the park, you could easily wipe their hard drive without even having to think about it. Its a very simple set of commands that would do it.

If anyone has 2 computers in their office and doesn't properly understand sharing and security, and they share out folders or printers or anything else, you could gain access pretty easily.

I dunno, would probably depend on how its configured. If -I- were in a setup like this, what I'd do is put a router/firewall between me and the network.

That way, you get something like:

    network----router---hub----computer, computer, computer ....

that way you could filter who gets to your computers and who doesnt.
