Cost of living in Canada?

I live in Mexico right now. A horrible place to be, I just want to get the heck out of here.
The only good thing is that the dollar is very apreciated. I am earning 2.5k each month with my sites, and thanks to that I quit my lousy job and live like a king :D (the minimum wage here is equal to 85 american cents an hour!!!)

My goal is to end the year earning at least 5k USD a month. Would that be enough to be able to live in Canada? I would like to get a job there, but meanwhile, would 5k allow me to live well? I am just about to get my British passport, would that help me in any way to move over?

Any ideas and tips are apreciated. Please, don't send me to any sites, I would like to see real experiences from people that live or have lived in Canada.

Dude, you are citizen of Mexico right now? Or are you American? A British passport is worth gold in my opinion.

5k a month would be more than enough to live well just about anywhere in the U.S. or Canada. Aside from places like Honolulu, San Diego, etc. (not sure how expensive areas like Toronto are)

I am a Mexican, I was born here and my father is a Mexican. My mother is British, and thanks to that it seems that I am able to get a british passport. I just need to gather up a few hundred british pounds and visit the embassy.
5k USD would be beer money in Europe, so I was thinking of moving over to Canada (I don't like the USA due to personal experiences).

$5K USD/month is $60K US or apprximately $75K Canadian annually at current exchange rates. That is more than enough to live comfortably in most places in Canada -- like most countries, it will go further in some places than in others, with Vancouver and Toronto probably the most expensive places to live these days.

I think 5k/mo. is enough to live anywhere. I like Mexico btw ... not Tijuana but the further you go inland, the nicer it gets

If you like the cold and want to stretch that money further than you would ever imagine, but still enjoy nice days and life, have a look at Calgary, Alberta. Everyone I know who has ever moved there, never moves back... and they all left from BC!

PS: Look at this weather forecast http://www.wx.ca/?service=page/Forecast

That equates to about 52 degrees F for the high and about 6 F for the low... the best of both worlds....

Yeah, I was thinking about a small town, not really interested in a big city. I am studying right now to get an online degree on Hospitality Managment (a real degree, not one of those crappy "lifetime experience" ones), so I could work in a hotel or similar place. Being able to speak Spanish would be a nice extra for my resume.

I just want to get out of here, find a beautiful redhead girl, have 2 children and do something useful with my life. I am 31 years old and I will never do anything with my life if I keep living here.

That was certainly true in the 70s and then again in the 90s but I'm not certain it still is. The beef trade has been hard hit this year...

    Minstrel,

I am telling you, that town is a buzz. They have no provincial debt and Calgary is booming. I wouldn't consider it a huge town. You may want to look east of Vancouver into the fraser valley.

    Who doesn't! :D

BTW, is that why you live in SD?

    Fryman-

One thing is certain..... stay away from California. $$$$ 5K doesn't go far.

    No you wouldn't ST

Fryman the cost of living is cheap if you can live on NC's back porch with the dogs

Just clean up the joint everyday and chop some wood every half hour to stay warm, plus some for NC's fireplace and you should be fine man :p :)

At least you wouldn't be alone! (SD has more than the fair share of the homeless population)

Why not Alaska Fryman? It's cold as shit and I think they still pay you to live there after you have been there a while. :p (oil money) 5K would go a long way in Alaska.
