Which is the correct spelling? I had to look it up and realized that it is the most commonly misspelled word on DP. Sorry for a cheesy thread, but then again ... why not :D

Vote what you normally spell it as and then look here for the correct way :)

I don't know if there is an Americanism for this word but in the UK it is "definately"

    Thats nice rant.

btw, I checked my local old dictionary and found "definitely" as the word eventhough our education system is following british english since independence. [ We use colour and not color ]

I'm also always seeing lose and loose. When I first moved here I thought it was actually "Loose Weight" rather than "Lose Weight"

Come to find out, people just can't spell

English spelling on a whole is pretty screwed up in comparison to some of the spell-it-like-it-sounds languages out there. but hey- doesn't mean I don't like it :D

I had a problem spelling "definitely" correctly, many years ago. After the CEO of my old company corrected me twice, I committed the correct spelling to memory and never made that mistake again. I rather doubt that this is one of the words spelled differently in the UK, but was unable to find a free version of the OED online to check it.

I think both are correct. The people with loose weight just have a whole bunch of flappy fat flopping around.

That sentence if fun to say.

yeah..it is always a turn-off to see wrong spellings, and screwed up in using their-there, here-hear, to-too. although sometimes, there is always a tendency to commit innocent mistakes. :)
