Devils night in Detroit

New Orleans has Mardi Gras. Rio has Carnival, and Detroit has Devils Night. While most people aren’t as familiar with devils night the truth of the matter is that it is a big deal in Detroit and throughout Michigan. Rather than dressing up in costumes and parting in the streets, Detroit residents take to burning abandoned building, spray painting everything in sight, and engaging in any other illegal activity. Last year over a 3 day period nearly 200 deliberate fires were set within the city of Detroit. Now you have to remember that half of this decaying dinosaur of a town is abandoned. That’s nearly 20 square miles of abandoned building for people to set on fire this devils night. This number is down significantly since the 80’s where one year, I believe in ’88, there were over 800 fires over the three day period. This is what Detroiter’s do. We know our city has nothing to offer and is going nowhere. So for a 3 night span we burn down buildings and spray paint everything. The Fire helps decrease the number of building that will never be used again, and the paint adds a little color to an otherwise Grey landscape. The truth of the matter is that while lots of crimes are committed over devils night, it’s still safer than any other day in Detroit. I’m sorry to my fellow Detroiters for writing this post as I know it might make people like Detroit even less(if that is possible).

I sometimes watch NBC out of Detroit and am familiar with devil's night. It's just an excuse for vandalism. You've got too many unemployed people with too much time on their hands. The only thing these people are succeeding in accomplishing is to ensure that outside investors won't come to Detroit. The t.v. coverage with devil's night in no way helps the big unemployment problem. These hooligans are merely sealing their fate.

I doubt it’s devils night that keeps investors out of the D. In 2007 Detroit had the all time low graduation rate for an American city…. 25%. I wouldn’t invest in an american city where only 25 percent of its residents graduate from high school.

Is this where the movie, "The Crow" was supposed to be? I can see it. Many slums, a Devil's Night, crime bosses..... Not sure about the rain though. There is some good to Detroit though. Their Lions and Tigers and Bears oh my are doing well. Well, at least their Lions and Tigers. ;)
