Do I NEED a domain name to be successful?

Well first off, I'm not really sure where I should have posted this, so I'm sorry if this is the wrong place.

Currently my site is http://quotevoid.sitesled.com I get about 200-300 hits a day after about 5 months. Most of that traffic is generated through things I do, such as posting "quote of the day" topics on various message boards. I would say maybe 10-20 hits a day are from search engines. Adsense says I make about 9 cents a day, and I've made a total of about $13 in 5 months.

Anyways, after hearing that, do you think a domain name would help at all? Like, does having one improve my page rank and what not?

    Thanks for any help!

I'd get a domain so that you aren't tied to some other company. You can transfer the traffic and do well on your own.

The only real advantage is in the autonomy.

A domain name could only help your business, not hinder it. You can get domain names from as low as $3 from registerfly if you want a .info, dot coms not much more expensive from godaddy or namecheap.

    Definitely get a domain.
Also, once you have a domain you can really think about branding if you have other ideas and expand...

No, You dont need a Domain Name to be successful, I run a MySpace website and one of my competitors used to be listed on the top ten for specific keywords, and his/her site was a subdomain. As I have learned Google treats subdomains like a normal domain. So all in all... Your own personal Domain Name Looks more professional, But You dont have to have your own personal Domain to be successfull

It takes a lot more than a domain name to be successful. If it were that easy we would all be rolling in the cash.

I agree with all that has been said, you can get by and do well without a domain name but the time will come when you want one and you will already be indexed under something else. Many times those not running under a domain name are running on free hosting which does not allow easy and/or acceptable form of redirection. When you finally make the move to non-free hosting under your domain name you may well face sandbox and have to wait to be indexed again.

Good luck to you however you go.

Yes some .info domain would cost you only $3. You can find free or dirt cheap shared hosting :)

It's TOO cheap for branding your success, so why not invest a very low amount for big incoming possibility in your success ??

I always suggest to start with a domain and a logo to brand yourself as early as possible.

Just get a domain name, they aren't that expensive (unless you plan on buying a neat one off of someone which could be pretty expensive).

You should buy a domain name because

[1] It gives your business a unique look
[2] You can have advantages of Google Ads and a lot of other choices for ads
[3] You can serve affiliates too I think, much more options in those too
[4] You can even try selling links if you get a good PR
[5] It opens up an option for you to sell your website later on

Alright lol, looks like I should get a domain name!

Currently, I'm liking sitesled alot, but I don't really want to get on their plan because it is w/e a month, like 3.99 or 4.99 or something. I remember I found a site once, not sure which, where you could enter a promotinal code, 777, and you could get a years worth of hosting + domain name for like $10. Anyone know of the site I'm refurring to?

Thanks for the advice! I never even thought about if my current site gets popular and then I change names, then I will have to redirect tons of links and what not.

BTW, is it easy to redirect links? Like when a site changes their url and their old url has a page saying "we have moved, you will be redirected in five seconds, or click below to go there now." Is that at all difficult to do?
