I joined facebook and I want to use it to promote my site. Is there any proven benefit to using social network affiliation to build a customer base?

Yes there is but it totally depends on the approach if you use a saturated method like making a fake fan page then later on renaming it then sorry to burst your bubble but it won't be very effective as you think. Try some other things to make it more effective.

Focus on Facebook, and expand from there. Twitter second best in my opinion. You can run giveaways to increase likes, social syndication, and other things to get real shares. I don't believe in purchasing fake shares and likes as they dissapear and can put you on a watch list

I've been online since 97 doing various web marketing things and social medias changed my life.

Go for it. As weird as it seems, it's easier to control everything then search engines.
I lost so many things because of them that i actually let them go. I ain't spending ONE minute of my time into them anymore.
Anyways, i think they will die slowly as the social medias become search engines themselves
