    They've done a reasonably good job of hiding that.

    Most web development companies I know have their own inhouse systems. It's only the little guys (like me) who rely on opensource.

    oh, and you don't want a site like that 3rd example.

    It depends on your specifications. I like silverstripe and Joomla but you'd do well to take a look at www.opensourcecms.com and see what works for you
