Facebook is not mainly used to play games and share photos, forums are a good place to discuss deep/detailed topics....so I don't see social media overtaking web 2.0 forum content.

It depends what type of forum it is. For instance you couldn't really do DP on Facebook, or say a fitness forum where people like to search for advice... but Facebook can put serious dents in forums for fans of authors and pop stars etc, where most of the forum posts would be pretty inane and it's easier to post the same drivel in FB.

Its not killing,. bcz people use social network just for commenting, but when we need long post with files, we go to forums

Hmmm... remember BBS's? Internet slaughtered them all but for a few popular ones that migrated to a forum. Now social networks and MMO's have completely destroyed that niche. Like the previous poster said, the landscape is changing... but whats next to come?

There is no point to compare a forum with social networking site.

look, both are different, social networks are for instant status exchange ,you can meet with friends there ,live chat etc.But if you need any help from some professional people you must have to come to forums,no options. So forums are more for technical help...

I'd say for the time-being forums are here to stay, but as we move more towards web3.0 where information is much easier to cypher through using social metrics and search engines and the semantic web - that it's hard to say with any authority which technologies will survive and which will fall by the way side. Many people I'm sure still use newsgroups - but the technology is ending due to all the better alternatives that are coming around.

In the next 5-10 years - it's anybody's ballgame, not to mention that by 2020 most of the web access will be mobile related. Any site not mobile-ized will no be positioned to compete with the rest.

No. Forums usually specialize and cater to the crowd in their niche.

However, a forum created for the sole purpose of social networking would not be doing well right now...

Social networks for fun, forums for professional discussions - it's a very formal differentiation.

I dont think so, there are still a different between forum and social network. Forum is more in knowledge learning and sharing, forum member like a group of people who interested in certain niche and share with each other but social network is different, it is more on friend making.

i am not agree with you. They both perform different. Forums are very informative, social network can not hamper its value.

Well, I do not join them for the same reasons. Social networks are more for personal, social, or fun life, but I can't learn as much as I do from forums like DP. And social networks sometimes get me bored faster, while it rarely happens with forums.

Both are different palce so, is is not wise to compare both. Both are in there place and doing well.

I prefer forum to get some knowledge and discuss to find the solution.
