i can do asp.net and asp though i am not experienced enough in it so quite a bit of the code is sloppy, i figure if i do a couple of projects with them i should be able to blag a decent .net job if my SEO job doesnt work out. I know a little PHP but i really could do with learning it properly.

I completely agree with your post. I do exactly what you described in the post. I dont have a very big firm, but if you practice this concept chances are you'll grow faster.

    I know HTML, that's it.

My main web designer has been designing for over 10 years - so I don't have the talent or the time to design my kind of websites (media-rich designs).

I plan to one day take a course in php and web design but for now I don't need to, as I spend several months on each website I produce so it won't help me much.

Don't know many yanks who are self proclaimed geezer birds.

If you want good Books checkout sitepoint.com

I code, design and manage servers.. Although for big projects I hire coders and designers so I can concentrate on bigger aspects e.g. markting , sales..

A working knowledge of HTML only. I wish that I could code. I think I'm a little late and old. hehe

Is it true that you can teach yourself with the right books (O'Reilly) and A LOT of time and patience? I had a programmer friend who was completely self-taught...16 languages, 6 years, and I thought that he was really talented. I watched him code a website with a large database from scratch. *amazed*

Those of you who code....what are you thoughts on how long and how easy or hard it is to learn? What's the best language to start with?
