Does every page in sitemap need to be linked to from somewhere in the site?

I have a site that tracks price changes and is searchable by keyword.

What I would like to do is index a lot of those keyword searches. Should I create a page of "popular searches" and have a lot of links displayed on that page. Or, can I just submit that URL in my sitemap with the same results?

    Thanks!

If you submit a URL to Google in the sitemap, they will likely come out to crawl it. If you have no backlinks going in to that page, they will likely ignore it at some point in processing that page. Without a link coming into it, the page has no value and will be discarded.

It's kind of odd to have a sitemap with links to pages that aren't "in the site".

thank you for the information... I think I have decided to add links to these pages.

They are actually pages that would be found when submitting a query to a database, so currently they wouldn't show up as links anywhere.
