i heard that there're some who claims that you need to OPTIMIZE sitemap the same reason you need to optimize webpages. but since that info came inside a sales letter i thought i'd better ask you guys. :)

I can't say for sure, but we use this one...with fabulous results. Google, always crawls our site within a week and updates their index:

Well, it won't let me insert the link. But goto Yahoo, type in - google sitemap and it's the #3 page in the results.

    For sure it doesn't matter.
What I do recommend is using one generator all the time,
so there will be consequent results and not mixed different ways all the time.

Are you sure they were talking about XML sitemaps? If so,
the only thing I can imagine is priority and lastmod tags...

If HTML sitemaps, it is nice if appropriate titles can
be generated. (i.e. anchor text containing keywords.)

If Google accounts for <priority> tags, I would
say it matters which site map generator you
use. If not... Well, then it matters less !

I think it depends on what your cms is. I have a site with joomla running a sitemap component and a drupal with sitemap module. I found that the sitemaps created by drupal module were clean and error free while joomla tends to create some duplicates etc., causing google to highlight issues about my sitemap in http-errors etc.
