[dp Update] Not Able To Post In Few Sub-forums

Discussion in 'General Chat' started by samkak, Jan 26, 2013.

I have been a member of DP since 2009 with a good karma and good number of posts.

Ever since this update rolled over at DP, it says I can't create a new post on sub-forums like buy/sell section, etc due to insufficient permission/points or whatever.

I am pretty sure, I am not the only one facing this issue. But the question is, Is this fair? Do we need to start all over again with our account?

Yes I know that. But was it necessary? Is 4 years not enough to be an established member?

I agree with you that might be little bit humiliating for old and high reputed members.

I'm having the same problem and in my point of view what makes it more difficult is

    1) Only already established members who can gives likes.
    2) If not established member then still can not write in free stuff section.

But i think it can be easily get it by writing tutorials or solve problem of someone at PHP section since you are expert in php coding whatever it helps.

It definitely was enough time to get 3 likes, but somehow you did not in that time period. :)

I wasn't aware about the concept of likes in the older versions of DP.

Moreover, the purpose of visiting this forum for many of us is, finding people to work with & sell products. So I don't think sharing tutorials, tips, etc should be mandatory for that.

Yes there are sections for helping out with tutorials, but why make it mandatory for posting on the sections which have nothing to do with it?

Writing tips & tuts should be voluntary and not compulsory. You are inviting spam with this new policy.

Anyways, hope you get my point. No more argument from my end.

Actually believe it or not, spam has been cut down tremendously since the change. Spammers generally aren't going to take the time to actually contribute something useful.

As far as the main purpose of this forum, it's not the marketplace. The marketplace has always been intended as a benefit for existing users. Whether or not it's the only purpose for *you*, that's a different story... But if this site honestly has no use to you other than the marketplace, you probably are going to be better off selling stuff elsewhere that is actually a site focused on that.

You know i wasn't like this new rule of "likes" to get extra perks
but after thinking i found it is very good idea and helpful for whole communities of dp
and gives extra protection against spam and low quality and who post'n'run.

Now we been thinking what about if they added "dislike" button :)
once got someone dislike means -1 of own total likes that makes people really do thinking before writing single word.

i'm betting you shawn you have that option in your secret control panel like Area 51

Just hope with the Spam, total number of posts made (hence traffic) doesn't come down, Shawn! Wish you best of luck!

Yep... statistics-wise, everything is as good as I had hoped. Number of posts are the same, number of new threads is about half of what it was (less spam and since the posts are the same, the threads are tending to be better, with more users interacting with each thread). Also, overall user engagement is up (people are spending about twice the time on the site per visit now vs. before).
