dreamhost.com ?

someone pointed me their way,,, 20GIG space and 1TERABYTE bandwidth/month for about $8 has anyone heard of them or use their services?

 

I'm using them and I actually like them. I've got a bunch of domains and subdomains on one account. The only thing you need to be aware of is your CPU usage. They are very generous with storage/bandwidth, but if you have lots of CPU-intensive stuff (php scripts/database usage) then you might run into problems. I havn't had a problem with that yet. @bschneider5 Have you ever had a problem with using too many CPU minutes? I havn't, but I've read about some people who have. Are your sites static or dynamic?

 

Never used them before, but I do know they've been around since 2001. You don't get that far unless you've got something stable.

As far as the CPU minutes issue is concerned, I don't know PHP, and I haven't used DreamHost. But I have run into that issue once, and it was my own fault. I'd coded a weighted random banner ad rotating script, based on CTR and time until expiry.

The problem was that, as it learned the CTR and continued to calculate, it got more and more intensive until it crashed the server.

I learned in a big hurry to fix it.

The moral is...always assume it's your fault first. When you've established that it isn't, then go blame the host.

I'm not saying this isn't the host's fault. I'm just telling a story to try and give some of the better hosts out there a bit of a break. It's a bitch of an industry as it is; let's not make it any harder on them than we have to. We need them.

 

I have 5 or 6 sites hosted with them. I have no complaints.

 

I've been with them for a year, got in on a promo for 1 domian name and hosting for a year for around $15 (It was coupon code 777 or something like that, I think it has expired).
I now have about 8 sites hosted on the one account, and have been pretty pleased with the results, thought they wouldnt be that good at their prices.

 

Been with Dreamhost for over 3 years.... very happy

 

I'm hosted by Dreamhost as well, and I haven't had major problems with them. Plus I love the fact that I can host all my domains in one place.

 

I run five blogs, a discussion board and several static sites and have never had a problem.

 

Blogs and a forums-- so I assume you have to be doing something pretty heavy-duty to attract unwanted attention -thanks.

 

how about hostgator? Looking for hosting multiple site on their reseller plan. Compare to dreamhost, which one is better?

 

I havn't used hostgator, but dreamhost has worked fine for me hosting multiple domains.

 

Hostgator is more reputable. We use them for hosting our domains at work. Check some webhosting forums to see what others say about them.

I started an account with dreamhost at the weekend. I am about to test their money back offer!

 

I must say that Dreamhost is trying my patience lately... How do you folks like 1&1?

 

I haven't had any problems with either Hostgator or Dreamhost. I like Hostgator better because of Cpanel.

 

Dreamhost's plans are great, but the have a proprietory control panel that is difficult to use and you have to often wait 15-30 minutes for such things as an SQL database to be created.

If it were not for the crappy control panel, I'd be using them a lot more. I have no idea why they would have created such a lousy control panel system.

The speed and reliability of thier clustered servers has been great.
