    An individual cannot get/own EDU directly, but an individual or a group of investors can own a private college, which owns an EDU. For grandfathered EDUs (those registered prior to 2001), there are a number of instances of corporations owning an EDU; as in the above case, a person (investors) own(s) a corporation, which owns an EDU.

    Per Educause regulations, both grandfathered and new .Edu domains may not be bought/sold directly, only through the transfer of organizational ownership. As an example, if you purchased Stanford University corporation, you would by default become the owner of stanford(.)edu.
