Etymology of the word "slug" in the context of directory/file name

    I have developed a content management system that a few of my website design clients use, and am having difficulty conveying to them (most are not very computer literate) what kind of thing should be entered for the filename or directory name of an post/article/page/category etc.

    In WordPress, the term "slug" is used. Is this a commonly used term across many CMSs and blogs? If so, is there any particular reason it is called that? If not, is there any alternative industry standard phrase?

    it took me a while to figure out WTF "Slug" meant.. I say, use something that makes sense, like:
    URL
    FILENAME
    DIRECTORY
    CATEGORY
