finding something that works

I started out 5 years ago. My goal was to make money utilizing the internet as a source of income. I've had minor success with direct marketing and "get paid to" programs. But I never found something that really works.

I like the idea of having several content based websites. I'm a poor coder. I can do some php though... My main problem is: English is not my mother tongue. Writing in "my" language would make my audience shrink by at least 5-10 times. Moreover, I can't seem to find my "niche". I'm surely interested in several things, but I just can't believe that I'd have success writing about it. I also can't seem to keep myself motivated. I check my adsense stats every minute just to see 0 additional impressions and 0 clicks.

I'm not trying hard enough. I know that. But I'm getting nowhere fast. Maybe I should stop heading into different directions. Maybe I should try to focus on ONE subject. But I always feel so tired. It's so depressing reading around Webmasterboards, reading about successful webmasters, showing off their little Web-empires.

Maybe I need THE idea. But I wonder if THE Idea really exist. Or if it's just hard consistent work. Or luck.

Tell me about your Webcareers. How did you start out? How long did it take before seeing the first sucess?

I'm a web designer by trade and 21 year old fulltime college student. I started out building content sites and a little adsense empire 6 months ago. I'm averaging about 250/day right now and I've been all the way up to 750/day. It's about just DOING IT. Don't worry if it will work or not. It costs you $10 for the domain, $20/month to host tons of domains. Write short articles, or better have them written. Everything from printer drivers to cooking recipes will make money, also it doesn't matter if you do it by hand or use traffic generation programs, just DO SOMETHING. I put at least 10 new sites a week online to give you an idea what I'm talking about.

    Good luck!

$250/day ???? That works out to about $91,000/yr.

I'm in the wrong business. Clearly what you're doing works for you and that's great. I have to ask though, are you really adding any value to the Internet or just filling it up with more useless junk, increasing the signal to noise ratio.

How many sites are you managing?

I've had a business online since 1996. Most of my focus is on affiliate sales. I make sales sites rather than content sites.

In my experience (some good times, some slow times), the key is to get the right audience to the right site.

What has failed is: luring general traffic and trying to sell them something in particular; luring traffic that would have similar interests and trying to sell them my product; trying to sell anything that looks the least bit scammy (whether it really was or wasn't); paid advertising.

What has worked: luring traffic that is - already - looking for the product I'm selling and giving them the best deal available. The only effective means I have found for this is getting good search engine listings. I've never been able to make more money on paid ads than they cost (with adwords being an exception... but that can cost more than you make too if you aren't careful).

    Your English is fine.

Also important, if you do affiliate sales, is to get with a good company. Make some sales and make sure you get paid before you send tons of customers to them. PM me if you want some suggestions on good affiliate programs. One of the ones I have worked with for years will soon be launching a program to compete head to head with amazon, but it will have a better agent program.
