We'll have to keep an eye on Shawn, since he can go back and change posts ... but then again, Shawn has so many backlinks that yet another PR7 one would be a drop in the bucket for him.

BTW, my guess is that his time machine may have over-shot ... 10,782 might be a decent guess for christmas ... but will almost certainly be too high for Halloween.

iskander: I don't think their image resolution is good enough to count lights via Google Earth (plus the satellite imagery is dated and I haven't even put them up yet), but clever approach.

TOPS30: I'm not sure I understood all that, but it WAS a cool explanation! ;-)

elkiwi: digital enhancing is always a possibility with me as I have ... welllll ... have done some of this. But the light count has always been real ... if you are wondering about the "webcam", take a look at this $27.34 outdoor webcam enclosure I just made and installed across the street.

yfs1: Stay tuned on the ability to turn 'em on and off via the Internet ... for real this time! Yea, bugs don't have much to do with Halloween ... but then again, Pink Flamingo's don't have much to do with Christmas - see picture below.

palespyder: I'm fortunate to have good neighbors - I had 22,000 lights at Christmas/2002 and they were OK with it ... and they are OK if they lights really do go on and off this year.

Based on advanced calculations I'd have to say that it is 4500.

Contest rules say "comes closest to guessing the number of Halloween Lights" ... it's OK if you go over. I.e. if the total number ends up being 5,000 and two guesses are 4,997 and 5,002, then the later guess wins.

You guys do crack me up with the "Price is Right" guessing strategy! ;-)
