Please read, my Freelancer.com horror story:

Alvin: Hi there! How may I help you?
Dale Rodgers: Hi, I'd like to know why my withdrawal request was yet again cancelled. This has happened numerous times now and seems you are not giving me access to my funds. Just want to know the reason and whether or not I have to get in touch with trading standards.
Alvin: May I please have your Freelancer.com username?
    Dale Rodgers: *******
Alvin: Thanks for that information. Please give me around 2 minutes while I check your account.
    Dale Rodgers: No problem :)
    Alvin: Thank you for waiting.
Alvin: Your withdrawal has been canceled as your employer "monkey2012" is still suspended.
Alvin: We suggest that you contact your employer and ask your employer to cooperate with the proper department as they will be assisting the issue of your employer.
Alvin: Hello! Is there anything else I can help you with? If you're temporarily away from your computer, I'll wait 2 minutes and then close this conversation.
    Dale Rodgers: Hang on
    Alvin: Please carry on.
Dale Rodgers: I cannot be held accountable for my employers account being suspended.
Dale Rodgers: Please remove the funds provided by monkey2012 from my account and reactivate my withdrawals.
Alvin: We regret to inform you but we are holding the funds that your employer has paid you for security reasons.
Dale Rodgers: Well then you must reactivate my withdrawals for other funds.
Alvin: Once the issue of your employer has been settled, you may now proceed on withdrawing your funds.
Dale Rodgers: You cannot hold my other funds, and if you choose to do so then please be aware I will be taking this to trading standards as it is completely out of order.
Dale Rodgers: I understand you holding the funds from monkey2012, but not from other projects.
Alvin: The total amount that your employer has paid you is $142, which the proper department is holding it for security reasons.
Alvin: We suggest that you contact your employer regarding this issue.
    Dale Rodgers: I cant...
Dale Rodgers: My employer will not respond.
Dale Rodgers: And you are wrong about the funds
Dale Rodgers: It "was" 142 but you withdrew 100 from my account, and it seems I am still being held accountable for $142.
Dale Rodgers: If you check you ran reversals...
Alvin: Your employer has been notified regarding this issue as well. As soon as your employer's issue will be settled, you will be able to withdraw your funds once again.
Dale Rodgers: Yes but he is not responding!!!
Dale Rodgers: I am never going to be able to withdraw any funds.. This is my livelihood!!
Dale Rodgers: You have done reversals on the payments...
Alvin: We regret to inform you but your funds were temporarily being held for security reasons.
Dale Rodgers: I don't understand why I cannot withdraw funds on seperate projects.
Dale Rodgers: I don't care about monkey2012's funds.
Dale Rodgers: How do I go about speaking to someone higher? Contact number..?
Alvin: We regret to inform you but this is the only way to reach Freelancer.com.
Alvin: Also, you may send an email to .
Dale Rodgers: So tell me then Alvin, if my employer doesn't respond how am I going to gain access to teh funds I've received for other work I've done?
    Dale Rodgers: ?

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

What can I do? I have been working away on numerous projects and they won't let me withdraw. The help from the staff is useless as you can see... But, what can I do about it? How can I get my money?

That support staff is atrocious. I would recommend doing some research and trying to get the contact details of someone higher up on the totem pole. Usually those that are willing to help you more are further from the support department.

This is the first time, I have got such claim against freelancer. How long your payments are kept off? Did you tried to mail after that? What was the response? Really sorry that I can not help you as I have no idea. But may I request you to update us regarding the issue. I think, you know, lot of us are working there and we also need to be aware for the fact. Wish you will get your money back.
