Generating Content for a Health Site

Hi, I would like to make a site dealing with health. It will deal with diets, exercise, symptoms, relationship, etc...

side comment: is this too broad for an amature like me? should I focus on more specific topics and dedicate a site for each? would this take more/less work? would it generate more/less income?

I am not an expert on these subjects however. For instance while I can give tips dealing with certain areas of health, I can't write a book worth of info. My goal is to have many articles dealing with many things; ("health benefits of sauna", "aerobic exercises", "dangers of frozen foods" etc..)

So how do I build up my database? Is there thing such as free articles? If so, can they harm my site? Also, how much would heiring writers cost? My plan is for them to give me a rough outline, and then I fill in the meat of the article.

I think I would be capable of contributing 20-50 articles over the next year, but would like more (maybe 75 articles total). Then my plan is to eventually open up a forum and focus less on the articles.

Is there anything else a health site can offer besides articles? The only idea I can think of is a calculator that analyzes your health.

Lastly are recipes copywrited? I'e if someone says make sandwich X by "......,.....,..." would it be bad to just copy the recipe and use it for my site? I'd like to have some healthy recipes. I guess if this would be illegal, I would just ask my parents for some recipes.

    Thanks for the help.

I think you might have better luck focusing on a specific realm of the health field... You'd have to have a pretty massive site to cover everything from diet/exercise to relationships to food recipes and have the content be the slightest bit cohesive.

I would suggest picking one aspect that you actually have an interest in. It will make it easier to craft your own content, and since your visitors will care about that focus you can keep them interested by blogging about news and articles for that niche.

    Lastly, don't steal content :-p

RMK is right, you should pick a niche within the health topic instead of trying to write content for a broad range of subjects. There's a lot of competition in the health niche, so you will do better with a smaller targeted niche..for example instead of writing "weight loss" articles, you could write "weight loss for teens"..you get the idea.

You could get ideas by looking up articles already available, then write in your own words. It's best to have unique content for your site.

    Good luck.

personally id install wordpress and then invite people to write articles for your site. you get content, they get to see their work on the web, you get hits. build up your database, start the forum (at the same time) contribute stuff yourself etc.

Is there a way to have a regular skin website (like non joomla, non wordpress, just regular HTML like digital point) and then incorperate a blog format (wordpress) onto particular pages?

I just don't want to have an entire site that looks like a WP skin. In my opinion, those skins are very limited to what you can do (when it comes to non-blogging)

    Thanks for the info guys!

You can have a non cms driven web site then install the blog into a subdirectory and it will work just fine.
