Get these ads off my website!

I added adsense to my site- my pet community. We are all very knowledgable when it comes to animals... and because of this know what goes on in certain industries... so we are all against puppy-mills, kitten-mills, backyard breeders, factory farms, etc.

However, for example, on an article about why not to purchase from a pet store... all that shows up is pet store ads, internet (unreputable/byb) breeders, etc.

I can NOT go through all of the internet to remove each and every site. Is there any way around this??? If I could put in keywords such as "breeder" or "pet store" it would be PERFECT!!

 

You can filter them all out but then, judging by your high standards, you'd run out of filters in half a day. If you want to have strict control over your ads, the only way to do so is to sell your own advertising. You can do this yourself, put an "Advertise" link for people to contact you for rates, or you can sign up with Adbrite, and have them broker your ads for you. Adsense is keywords based, so if you have "pet" in your site, it'll give you pet ads, even if they're from guys selling them out of vans in Mexico. There's no way around that.

 

Start your own ad network.

Hello there, Im in a similar boat, and have blocked over 100 ads from showing. Cant block them all though. lol

 

Seen this happen elsewhere (and maybe the DP member will talk about it). Best advice - either a) live with it, b) spend your life ineffectively blocking ads, or c) remove adsense and go with another advertising programme you can more easily control.

Fortunately in my business we don't have backyard breeders of rare London maps, although we do occasionally have to explain our sources to an indignant Interpol.

Thanks all... I will definitely ad an advertising link... but I need to get my traffic up before it would be a worthwhile buy for any potential buyer.

Does anyone have suggestions on who I could use for "text links" or something like that as well... there is lots of space on my site for ads. Some I am using for non-profit organizations, animal rescues, etc- for free of course. For the rest of the free space I'd like to make some of my money back.

Also, incase you didn't already realize- this is my first site ever, I'm very new at this... about one month new, lol.

I was being sarcastic. But yes, your best option is probably to sell advertising (banners or text links) directly to people.

 

A compromise would be to remove ads from pages which are getting unacceptable results, while leaving them on other pages.

This would be "non trivial" to add to an existing CMS, but would be a great option for CMS maintainers to add to their next release. A flag which could turn advertising on and off on a per article basis when the article is first created and later if needed!

I was thinking about this, but my homepage is constantly changing, new articles etc. So who knows what content will be on my homepage on any given day.

You can use section targeting to try and help remove sections of the page with keywords causing the unwanted ads.

You can also use a service like AdBrite for a static link. Thing about AdBrite is on pages with lower overall traffic you don't stand to make too much money. On pages like your homepage you can do OK but probably less overall than with contextual ads.

 

Well ultimately your content should be what is attracting & holding the attention of your visitors & the ads are a nice compliment. As I run a pet site myself & have strong views on pet shops I know where you're coming from.

At the end of the day, I hope that visitors to my site read what I have to say & then click on the ads which compliment what I'm telling them. For example I wrote an article today on where to obtain a cat from (and recommended against pet shops). I hope the ads displayed aren't for pet shops selling animals, if they are I will block them.

There's been a few iffy ads on my site. Ebay for example. I may write a breed profile & then ebay have a listing saying "buy Burmese kittens". Which is actually against their TOS anyway. So I just blocked ebay from my site as I don't like misleading ads, and wouldn't approve of animals being auctioned off. Generally on my site the ads displayed are of a standard I'm happy with. Anything I don't approve of I block.

 

A wonderful tool with a great user interface I've found is Text-links-ads.com. They value your site based on Alexa ranking among other things (hopefully they take into account the skewed data running around Alexa) and sell adspace for you to people interested in advertising on your site. They have an approval system for publishers that you can choose where you are emailed every time someone decides to advertise on your site. You can review their site and accept or reject them. You may not get a lot of interest while your traffic is low, but to be honest you're probably making squat with Google while your traffic is low, too. There you're paid a monthly rate based on site traffic, how many ads you decide to show, and how prominently they're displayed. They have a tool you can use to price your web site when you sign up as well.
