There is Paint.NET and GIMP which are both free and quite decent

Fireworks is much better than Photoshop IMO. I just seem more comfortable with PNGs than PSDs.

I have become a photoshop snob. I started using it before adobe bought it. I've stayed with it over the years because it was a great photography tool and now its just part of the tool kit. I've used Gimp and it didn't offer all the features I personally want. I have trained others to use Gimp , it was all they really needed.

Everybody knows - Photoshop is the best while you do not need to buy it. ;)
Photoshop is professional product - but for cropping screenshots and making collages there are lot of great tools.

I only recently got photoshop, ive been using gimp for about a year, it was really weird changing at first, but i've had it for a week now and i know most of the basics, getting to the complex things now.
Gimp is a decent software, it's free and in the right hands can deliver stuff just as good as photoshop, i've created loads of tutorials for gimp and was pretty much an expert with the software, now im back to square one with photoshop :D So far it's better than gimp :D

I don't think so. Why do we hear "Photoshop'ed" mostly, and not "Firework'ed" :D
