Idea wise I was looking up terms that are highly searched for, not competitive, and pay good for adsense and found out that Paper Shredders look pretty decent.

Theres your million dollar idea. :)

The best way to get your foot in the door in the online business is to start a content-based site and run contextual ads (aka google ads, ypn). IMHO, getting into e-commerce without having significant online experience and investment is next to impossible.

How about building perfect model cars about 5mm from end to end then put together a website to sell them.
Is that small scale enough. D

well i would say, buy things off ebay, and resell them elsewhere.

i've done that for a while it proves very good income !

make sure you sell them at a higher price.

I'm with Shoemoney on this one. Ecommerce has a lot going for it, but first of all you'll need to come to terms with the much higher operating overheads, such as:

    1. more expensive ecommerce hosting
    2. ecommerce software
    3. recurring SSL fees
    4. payment processing fees
    5. stock
    6. shipping & packaging
    7. toll-free numbers

If you are still interested then don't forget the rest!

    1. providing customer care - time consuming, which inhibits the amount of time you can spend developing more sites
    2. chargebacks - they do happen, even if you've done EVERYTHING correct
    3. fraud - depending on your market it can be a big issue
You'll also find that an ecommerce operation will keep you in one place. You can't just run off to Bali and soak up the sun because orders will keep coming and you'll not be there to process them.

Like Shoemoney says, a small online publishing operation is much more viable for a number of reasons.

    1. very low startup costs - buy a cheap resellers account and get going
    2. very little technical experience required
    3. no limits to what you can write about
    4. lots of advice available from others
    5. no need to worry about payment processing or handling money - you'll just be paid net 15 / net 30

How do I know this? I run several stores and have moved into online publishing - I can testify that it is more rewarding. :)

Good points but if you are operating out of your basement/garage it is much less expensive than a B&M. Many people that get into ecommerce are comparing to B&M operating costs. Even if they have to hire a developer to get them going it looks more promising.

You can also justify using Adwords, etc. and get revenue incoming relatively quickly. It's harder to profit from paid traffic with a pure content site.

One thing I would add to that is the residual income aspect. That has got to be one of the most attractive things about pure content. Your sites will still produce income even when you aren't working.

I agree overall and I think it is the best way for someone with 0 experience to start out but it seems to me that the most successful people are diversified with content, ecommerce, forums, blogs, etc.

That's very true indeed. I suppose it is easy to fall into the trap of comparing to brick and mortar stores, simply because we are so used to seeing them all round us. But one of the major pros to online commerce is the fact that you can run it out of your spare room very easily.

In fact, many people take it one step further and setup a website using a dropshipper. This option (if you can find the right dropshipper) is very promising as it removes the more tedious element of running a store, eg. packing and shipping product. Some dropshippers will also take care of aftersales, which is ideal but can raise issues with branding etc.

I wouldn't wish to sound 'anti-ecommerce', especially since so many make a very good living off it. Bit I do think that even taking into consideration off-the-shelf software it is probably best for most to stay away from ecommerce and strive for a residual income.
