Wrong they didn't buy them the sale fell through. Unless you can understand their business model back to front then you're totally wasting your time if you think you can replicate their success. Unless you have connections to tens of millions of dollars of venture capital.

I guess when you see all these billions of dollars transacting ignorance couldn't be more bliss.

The original post reads like a few Haiku glued together.

    ThePoint was the first
Groupon rose as deals for local
    Andrew Mason rich

Mason had built knowledge and a minor brand with ThePoint and focused that to a niche for local deals with Groupon. It was a perfect storm of timing and execution. Group buying had been tried before, but social networking was just strong enough when Groupon started for it to take off. Mason wisely got LOTS of money to build a local sales staff and grew any way he could.

The funny thing is, building a groupon clone from a technical standpoint is relatively easy. The hard part is everything else. :)

Exactly. there are no shortage of clones coming up - and I bet you could easily buy a script for it. but leg work, company knowledge and traffic are whats needed.

Clones designed specifically for local areas (as opposed to groupons local by sub points) model may work - but would be too much work for not enough initial pay for almost everyone that frequents DP (unless, as you say, you have venture capital access)
