    My gun sits quietly on my nightstand and never bothers anyone when I am gone. If someone was to break in and threaten me I know I have the upper hand to stop the situation dead in its tracks... I like that peace of mind. I don't have to wait for the cops to show up after the fact if I didn't have a gun...
    Cops are to write up reports after the fact...

    I'm in Australia, and I was shocked to find out that my next door neighbour owns firearms.
    He seems like a normal person, but I didn't expect him to be the kind of person to have guns in his home.
    I've lived next to him for about 5 years, and he never mentioned it before...

    Similar in Australia. Must complete a firearms safety course, must be of "good character", and demonstrate and maintain a 'genuine reason' for needing a particular licence type etc etc...
    It's no more complicated than joining the local library. I think the firearms regulations in AU are reasonable.
    In Australia, we don't (and legally can't) own firearms for self defence.
    It's just not part of our culture. We're farmers, hunters, and sporting shooters.
    There are plenty of firearms owners in AU and NZ. You don't hear about us because we're not shooting each other.
