Yes, me started a non-profit free hosting site. But finally ended up dumping the site completely because there was no profit! :D

I started a web that is intended to raise money for charity purposes, but it doesn't ask for donations, sells real product instead, with proceedings going to that particular community. Nothing big, but I thought it would be a better way than giving that product for free.

I'd like to start a non-profit for the homeless in my area, but I'm not quite sure how the process works. I'd like to be able to put all my time into it, therefore I'd have to take a small salary from the proceeds.

I'm just wondering if anyone knows how this process works.

    mikejmu,

I've been running a non-profit website in my spare time for 3 years. It's a heck of a lot of work but ultimately well worthwhile as I'm a web/database developer and it's brought me a lot of attention - I now have a lot of contacts who want me to do work for them or be a technical partner in their start-up enterprises. I have also developed working relationships with several marketing people in various industries and hosting companies, which is extremely valuable.

I have affiliate links and a couple of advertising banners on my site which at the moment generates just enough money to cover the hosting costs. I'm still looking for ways of increasing revenue, but now that my website is getting larger and more well respected, traffic is steadily going up and more opportunities are appearing.

So although my website is still essentially a non-profit website, the hard work has been worthwhile as it's opened up a lot of opportunities for me. Hopefully these opportunities will lead to some income which will help support the website.

Unfortunately as I'm still a 'Peon' with under 10 posts I'm not allowed to post live links. Will post a link here as soon as I've passed this threshold...

    Cheers,
    Mat

Not sure if you're in the UK but if your website is an original idea and for a good gause, It's well worth applying for a lottery award, eg UnLtd or Nesta. This would help get you started.

    Cheers,
    Mat

    Mat,

Thanks a lot for the advice. I'm in the US, so I don't have that option. I would like this organization for the homeless to generate enough revenue to cover costs, help out the homeless, and generate enough income pay pay for staff. I think I better go out to my local bookstore.

Yes, I ran a successful youth group website for several years. Whereas I could have made money on advertising *I certainly had the traffic for it* I really didn't see the need for it. Hindsight? Yea..20/20..lol

once my other sites get moving and make an income i plan to make my just-4-teens site a full none profit website, however at the moment all my sites are "not for profit" sites which means they are not made to make money but any income made is injected back into the site.
