What exactly is it used for, and is it an effective path worth taking?

oDesk allows employers (buyers) to create online workteams coordinated and paid through the company's proprietary software and website. The name is a short version of "no desk" in reference to the company's intent to enable anyone to work anywhere, anytime. Prospective employers can post jobs for free, and freelance workers (providers) may create profiles and bid on jobs, also for free. The company puts potential providers through a rigorous screening. The company collects 10 percent of the payment.

i have an account on odesk but i think it's kinda hard for 'starters' to get jobs without a good 'reputation'. i think it could be a nice start point if you're looking someone to get a job done for you!

Well if you are new to the site, then you will have to bid on jobs and work for very cheap so you can get some hours under your name. After a few times of doing that and raking in the hours, you'll be set for future work.

It's a very good service...I use it for outsourcing some projects at times.

It has a nice interface and a very good means for communicating with those you hire.

If you are looking to provide a service you can find plenty of opportunities there.

    Best Wishes.

I've tried winning a project on oDesk but always lose out to more experienced workers. Some employers were impressed with my cover letter and selected me through three levels of interviews, but in the end they didn't want to take a risk and went for the more experienced candidates! So it just goes to show that experience is all that matters on freelancing sites like oDesk. If you have some good experience in your field of interest then by all means, oDesk is an excellent place to find some work.
