Does anyone know of or can recommend a decent website promotion service?
... preferably an online service.

You are normally better off learning the correct way to promote it
yourself.

Then you can outsource the functions and tasks to others
and you will know exactly what you want from them. You'll be able
to guide them.

First you have to do the formal SEO for your website - which starts from on page SEO - and then switch on to off page seo - also this depends on the kind of website you have - if you have a content network and want to grow with time then you can opt for SEO - but if you want instant boost-up then probably you need to start with advertising.

Off page just means backlinks to your site.
On page are the SEO principles applied on your site.

how does your site make money? if you sell any type of product or service look at buying ad space or clicks on google or somewhere, that works wonders.
