    You're talking a pretty big task to be like PayPal. I would be looking at the legal requirements before even thinking about a website, lol.

    Did you even read what the OP posted? He does not want paypal, he wants to develop a payment gateway service like paypal.

    @Dhaval you will also need to create API and widgets for people who want to use your payment gateway. The most important thing would be security. When financial transactions are considered security is paramount. Hackers will find loopholes in your system much sooner than you think and bring you to a bankruptcy in no time.

    Probably study in MIT for getting programming knowledge of all coding, API's etc and we hope one day we get rid of dis-functional Paypal support when dealing with payments non-tangible products.

    I have loved this thread. For sure, anyone can start a payment processor just like paypal did. It is true that you need money but stating that it isnt possible is a pessimist mind.

    I have same dream and I am working hand in hand with an expert who is guiding me through the process.

    I am starting small by offering people exchange money from existing gateways, mobile phones etc. I got lot of help from http://www.paymentprocessor-script.com who have an already done code that they can help you work around with. Now, I am on the process of collaborating with a bank.

    There is something I know for sure. Doing it exactly paypal way may be hard, but doing it in your own innovative way will cut a niche for you. Juts be smart and avoid pessimism and you will make it.

    Developing it is the easy part :) . . . just pay someone to do that, on an outsource site such as UpWork, or take the time to learn to code, and do it yourself.

    The challenge is marketing it. I'd say that marketing is usually 99% of the challenge with most things, with creating the content or system being about 1% of what's needed for success.

    So unless you have experience of real success with marketing something similar, I'd advise considering not doing it :)
