How do you balance your time?

Roughly what percentage of your time do you spend on:

• Maintenance of existing sites and business
• Development of new sites and business
• Promotion of your sites and business

I think over the course of the year it should balance out to roughly 1/3 each shouldn't it? What is your top priority?

I just hate the routine maintenance kind of stuff. It seems like housework to me and anyone who has ever been to my house knows I loathe housework. I wake up every morning grateful that the dust dinosaurs haven't eaten any of the family members (we are still missing a cat...).

I'd rather spend my time on new development any time although there are those days when I don't want to click on my brain and maintenance might seem attractive. Of course then I usually spend the day playing Mah Jong instead...

People usually take outsource support start from maintenance and enjoy full time playing and watching movies.

I promote as much as possible, but it's normally not the sort of thing that time=result with, I can be searching the web one day and finding a good promoting opportunity that I wouldn't have found if I spent days looking

I use the principle from the 'E Myth'. Basically this says to run a successful business you must be part Entrepreneur, Technician, and Manager. I get my wife to schedule my week based on an equal split between the three. She decides what needs to be done for me because my inclination is always to do the fun things (typically the technician things).

In your example you could map

promotion = entrpreneur
development = technician
maintenance = manager

 

I think it mostly depends on which stage you are.

If you have just started with your site, adding content may take your most of the time, then it would be promotion and later - maintanence.

As for me something like:

50% development
40% promotion
10% maintenance

 

5% development
45% promotion
50% maintenance

Right now I am in the beginning phase of everything. I am starting into a new sector. And since the sites that I have 99% completely developing are running smoothly with minimal maintenance my split is probably as follows

75% development
20% promotion
5% maintenance

In about 2 months the development and promotion sectors will flip
