How Do You Find Your Copywriting Projects?

Since I fell into copywriting the majority of my jobs have been found through pure good fortune - i.e. I'll be writing keyword articles for a client and he'll ask if I know of anyone who can write decent copy for a site he owns. My eyes will flash dollar signs (well, pound signs since I'm British) and I'll take the assignment.

However, I can't see many copywriters building a stable career using my haphazard approach, so I was wondering how most of you find work? Bidding websites? Forums? Personal contacts?

Our work all comes from word of mouth. We do have a website but we haven't updated it in a year or more. We're now in the position where we have so much work that both my partner and I plus 6 other writers are kept working flat out on orders from clients around the world.

We've got to the stage now where we get people like you to produce work for our own projects.

I write a sales letter, attach it to a dove and send it off. About 1 time out of 100, the dove lands by a potential client and I get the job. ;)

I also tried imprinting my business card in Jell-O and sending them home with kids from the local schools. That didn't work too well. The kids tended to eat it before getting home.

I am thinking about hiring my local landscaping service to go cut my name into lawns in the middle of the night. The press might be worth it.
