How Do You Make Money From a Website?

Discussion in 'General Business' started by brandon_wallace, Jan 12, 2021.

What are the various methods to make money using a website (passive or active income)?
I am not really talking about selling a physical product via the website because that is obvious.

How much money could a person make for annual income?

    • ads
    • charge for content
    • accept donations (don't know if this works... 20 years ago it didn't)
    • get a billion visitors and wait for an IPO:)
Ads pay on average 0.50 - 5 USD / 1000 views (+-500%). Depends on what the website is about and how much are your visitor types to the advertiser. These have to be legit views.

Create a course on something and sell that.. It's still selling.
Passive income can be achieved, but you have to work your ass off in the beggining and have a really good site idea and execution. Oh.. and marketing and a differentiator.
If you're good, copycat sites still work and generate income. If the users add the content, or you scrape it, it can be passive, otherwise, you have to pay someone to add new content.

The question is too general. How much can you make? Anywhere from ZERO to a million or more. Realistically? A few bucks, and you have to work your ass off just for that.

Write, add content, write, add content...blah blah blah...you have to BUILD an audience to make anything and it's not overnight success. Then, once you have actual visitors, you can monetize your content in many ways, such as affiliate ads, selling stuff, selling the site itself, banners, pops, posts, etc...

    Good luck!

Affiliate links. You can recommend products while you give advice to your audience - amazon associates is great for this. Once you start getting a lot of traffic you can place adsense ads on your site, or sell ad spots to individuals for monthly income.

Build your audience through social media by sharing your content. Post content often to speed up the process. Try to build a mailing list in the process, so you can reach your audience in multiple ways, and sell to them via email as well. A lot of this can be automated to an extent, but it's still a lot of work and time to get to the point where the site is making you money in your sleep.

A lot of people are moving away from Facebook ads to help online business and moving to Tik Tok, Why because Facebook is going to allow people to opt-out of advertising soon. At least that is in the rumor mill. So the place people are headed is Tik Tok and this audience is more niche and looking for what they are interested in.

Create a site that gets traffic for local business and sell the leads to that business. I have a roofing site that gets lots of local traffic and I sell leads to a roofing company, they give me 10% of the sale so I make a couple grand a month.

There are many ways to earn money via a website, however, that only comes from traffic, lots of it.

There are a number of different ways to monetize a website, unfortunately, the margins aren't what they used to be, mainly because display ads suck now.

-Ad placement: display ads, video ads (better CPM, but hurts user experience, so you've gotta strike a balance), etc....ads offer different CPMs depending on where you place them (sidebar, header, footer, nav menu). So sure, you can stick them in your nav menu or your header, but you'll probably piss off your readers, and they won't become return visitors. ...Basically, don't trade CPMs for user experience. UX > everything, for a number of reasons, which I'm sure you probably already know, so not gonna get into this.

-Affiliate marketing -- Meh, gotta really build up a solid following and passionate audience to make anything substantial here, but every little bit adds up. It kinda depends on the theme of your website, too, as different niches translate better to relevant products.

-Sponsored content: videos, blog posts, social media posts (once you build up your social media feeds, you can leverage these channels).

*This is probably where you'll make the most money -- once you build up your site's audience size/traffic, metrics [DA, Ahrefs, DR, etc.] -- but it's also the most boom-or-bust. Higher-risk, higher-reward, so be careful, as you don't want to get hit with a Google penalty. Make sure you're only linking out to/using external links for reputable/higher DA sites, and try to match what they're promoting to the theme of your website.

Hope this helps! Good luck.

You can earn money from websites in many ways. But you need to boost up the site and look after the traffic that will help you to earn more and more.

If you take selling out of the equation (as you said in your post - that is obvious) then the only methods I can think of that might work today (I've been out of running websites for a few years and the landscape can change SO quickly) are:

Ad networks - You are going to need a shedload of traffic to make anything of substance from this. I believe with the rise in people using ad-blockers the payouts are getting less and less.

Sponsored content - Sponsored posts, videos, audio, etc. You are going to need to build up a decent-sized audience to achieve this.

    I'm sorry I can't be of more help. :)

The very first thing you need to earn money from a website is to increase the number of users to your website. There are various ways to drive users to your website but be patient because it is not an overnight process to increase the website visitors. And the other ways are already suggested in the above-posted replies.

Try adding a clickfunnel to your website with one product on it. Use the up sell feature and give a discount to buy in bulk or add a product. This system has been working for a while now a lot of people. The product does not have to be physical, it can be a service or a subscription of some kind.

Before any money can be made, paid, affiliate or otherwise the traffic has to be there. If you're website is no ranking then you are going to find it very hard to attract visitors. Also it is dependent on what the niche of you website is, would anyone be looking for your content, products or services? How is the sites SEO? There are factors that need to be taken into account before you can really start monetizing a website.
