    - The best way to analyse social media response is traffic coming to client's website from these sources (using Google Analytics)

    - How many visitors are actually converting into leads

    - How people are reacting to the service (positive, negative, neutral)

    - Followers and fans

You can use applications for monitoring social media for a client. Aside from Google Analytics, I have found 10 recommended apps that could be useful in monitoring social media platforms. These include: Hootsuite, CoTweet, SocialOomph, social mention, Postling, TweetDeck, Seesmic, Brizzly, Sprout Social, and Radian6. These are just some of the various social media monitoring applications on the web.

Yes, i agree with that. Analytics is great, but you can try a lot of other tools. Traffic Travis, Market Samurai, etc.

Go with Analytics. It has one of the best tracking of where visitors are coming from. :D

The tools johnrone has mentioned ;)

Plus, there is this new SMM tool called BuzzBundle. It allows you to monitor mentions of your brand, track your social postings, reply to people on Facebook, Twitter, blogs and forums, and do other things.

Sprout Social is a social media manager tool that you can use. If you use Google Chrome, you can download it as an extension. It's pretty powerful
