How do you update your site W/O content management?

This is a really stupid question, so go easy on me here.

I've only experimented with sites with CMS and those kind of systems, like Wordpress, and proxies, etc.

So when you build a new website, say it's a basic content website, how do you update it? Do you edit the HTML code directly or something?

I edit some of my sites in plain HTML, while others use some CMS. It depends much on frequency of updating site.

If updates are rare for me it's better to have plain HTML to avoid security problems.
