How does a business change web developers?

    A company already has a website created by web developer A, hosted by webhost A and their domain name is registered with registrar A. They want me a newbie to create a new website for them and keep their original domain name because it is printed on all their business cards etc. How do I go about keeping the original domain name but changing the domain name registrar to registrar B and changing the webhost to web host B? Do I need to contact the original Web developer? Do I have to wait until thedomain name/webhost expires? The company may not even own the domain name but the original web developer may own it.
